Should brake pads be replaced when changing rear shoes ?

i have a 2003 mitsubishi galant and i was told that i need rear shoes. is it necessary or wise to also replace the pads ?
Should brake pads be replaced when changing rear shoes ?
Pads are for disk brakes. Shoes are for drum brakes. The only way you'd have both on the rear is if you had disk brakes with a small drum in the middle of the rotor for parking brake shoes.
Should brake pads be replaced when changing rear shoes ?
check the thickness of front disc pads, if worn out , you replace it too..
Not necessarily. If the front brakes are okay, leave them alone.
It would be a good idea to have them looked at by the mechanic and have them tell you how far they are worn. If they are half gone or whatever then it would probably be a good idea while the car is there and it wont cost you very much more. It will save you a service call later on because you will normally go through two sets of front brakes to one set of rear shoes if everything is working good. Hope I have been helpful.
My theory is for every 3 times changing the front brakes I change the backs once
Only replace what they stated was bad. If your front pads were bad they probably would have told you. I do my own brakes so I woudl be pulling the wheels and checking them anyway.
fronts wear faster most cases you replace ones that are in need

before they wear out what saves you money

knowing when they need or almost need to be replace easy to learn how type into search box

The worn of shoes doesn't mean also the worn of pads, so the replace of the pads is not needed. On periodic maintenance, there is a list of brake check for front and rear. The shoes can be faster to worn then pads by the different construction and material, also a miss adjustment may cause of the worn. For the pads, do check, if the thikness is below half, then do replace. It's wise to do the check and replacement, but don't make it will be waste money. Also do the maintenance as list on the owners manual service book, the list including brake check every 10000 km.
