when you get to the 'spread the pads' part I use a couple of wooden shingles cut four inches wide. Then I drive these tapered slats in , one from the front, one from the back until they pistons spread. then I finish the job. This is also a good thing to do if you are just taking the wheel off and not diddling with the brakes. Screwdrivers work but might scrarch or gouge the bady of the caliper. wooden shingles wont. If you know someone who does roofs they can probably get you a lifetime supply for free

first you buy new pads.. $50 bucks or less..

then you spread the old pads.. You can do it with a couple of screw drivers.. or spanners ... spread the old pads as far apart as you can

then undo the bolts holding the caliper to the fork..

pop out the old pads..

stick in the new ones.. bolt the caliper back in place..

pump handle bar lever till you get pressure
To add to stumble123stick's answer, you can also go to the Home Depot and buy a bag of door jamb shims for a couple of bucks. These are tapered wedge shapes, made of wood. Drive one in from the front of the caliper, one from the rear, to spread the pistons without risk of gouging.
