Do all brake pads have wear indicators?

I have a 2000 mazda protege with 53,000 miles on it. It has never had its brake pads changed because I use brakes as little as possible. Will I definitely hear a squeaking sound when it needs new pads? Or do some brake pads have no wear indicators which means I might wear out the rotors?
Do all brake pads have wear indicators?
Not all brake pads have wear indicators, nor will you be guaranteed to hear wear indicators(if equipped) before the friction material(brake pads) are done.

At 53k your OEM rotors will need to be replaced as well as the pads. Machining brake rotors is an antiquated process in auto repair today.

How do I change brake pads and rotors on a 98 pathfinder ?

Is it 2 or 4 wheel drive. The brake job on a pathfinder is a little more complicated as it is not just a slip-on rotor set up. I would purchase a manual for your vehicle (repair not owners) as it should have step by step instructions as well as photos and a list of tools needed for the job.

I changed my brake pads, yet still the brakes don't work. What now?

I changed my thirty-two year old brake pads and yet still the brakes don't lock the wheel up. Could it be some sort of contamination on the wheel? I have recently cleaned my rims - using soap on the back one. What should I do now?
I changed my brake pads, yet still the brakes don't work. What now?
Chrome rims will never allow the brakes to work that well. Especially in the rain. If your pads are fresh, your calipers %26amp; levers work smoothly and the cables are well lubed - you did all you can do. These older bikes never had good brakes to begin with. I remember taking my sister's SA 3 speed %26quot;English Racer%26quot; out in the rain - it'd take me a block to slow down.
I changed my brake pads, yet still the brakes don't work. What now?
Take it out on the Expressway and open it up to make sure they don't work!!!

or better yet a crowded Mountain pass!

No. Have a Pro do it. You have Brake Pump Pressure unit problems.

Very likely the seal around the cylinder is eaten away and needs to be replaced so you are getting no Brake Pressure in the Master Cylinder.
hey, i used to work for halfords as a bike specialist!

first of all clean the rims with mentholated spirits but don't get it on the Tyre!!!!

also consider the age of the bike, not all brakes are designed to work the same way, e.g bmx brakes are only designed to slow you down!

you might want to change the cables! or Aline the pads! you do this by the two small screws on the brake arm!

if you think this is to compacted take it to halfords or a bike shop, they will only charge about 拢10 for a brake service!

hope all goes well.
Steel rims have always been problematic for braking surfaces despite constant efforts at changing the surface texture, finish, etc. because steel rims tend to flex and reduce braking efficiency.

To make matters worse, many steel rimmed bikes have stamped steel brake calipers which ALSO flex as the brakes are applied making it almost impossible to stop let alone skid.

So, assuming you don't want to change the rims to alloy, your next cheapest option is to find some alloy brake calipers, and add metal brake levers (if you don't have them) and some good cables and housings. This will improve braking but probably not to the point of being able to lock up the wheels. Sorry.
BMX brakes aren't meant to stop you, just slow you down? What rubbish! Just because you can't adjust them properly doesn't mean that they're meant not to work. Halfords specialist eh? Figures.

Anyway.....

What are the cables like? You could be suffering from cable stretch or the housings may have expanded so that when you pull the lever, all that's happening is that the cable and housing get compressed, rather than the effort being applied to the brake. I'm assuming you have something like a Raleigh 20, and the brakes should be adequate - they won't be brilliant, but they should stop you in the dry without too much trauma.

Also - are the pads you've bought compatible with steel rims? Most are but some may be alloy only.
In addition to some of the good advice here are more tips:

Clean the rims with simple green. Then apply more and allow to air dry. It will make the pads stick better.

Also, try Odyssey 1x4 brake pads.

And before you install the new pads, boil them to remove the wax that's on them from the mold they were formed in. Just remember to use a disposable pan. Don't reuse it!
Silly sausage. You should be pressing the middle pedal.
Get a car!
Remind me... never to ask you anything mechanical.

If I dont touch the brake line when changing pads on 03 focus do I have to bleed them?

No. You only need to bleed the system if it opens to air. You will push the caliper binds back either by hand or with a tool, thus not exposing the fluid.
If I dont touch the brake line when changing pads on 03 focus do I have to bleed them?
No. Simply loosen the master cylider cap to let off the pressure when you compress the calipers.
If I dont touch the brake line when changing pads on 03 focus do I have to bleed them?
no
you don't have to but they recommend doing it to circulate new fluid into the system... either way make sure to pump the brakes back up before driving the vehicle... good luck
as long as all you did was compress the cylinders in with a

C clamp, NOPE
YES. Every time you change the brake pads, you REALLY SHOULD bleed the brakes as a matter of safety maintenance.

Chances are that your brake pedal has a little more travel than it should. This is very, very COMMON.

Your brakes stop the car and keep people from being KILLED. DON'T make assumptions with them.

I don't mean to sound like an alarmist, but I can't stress the importance of this enough. A major cause of brake fade (loss of stopping ability) is from an accumulation of gasses from the brake fluid being overheated.

BLEED THE BRAKES.
Technically no, but after 4 years it might be a good idea to have all the brake fluid replaced with new fluid.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air like a sponge which over time can rust your brake components from the inside and shorter their life span.

It's pain to do yourself, but my brake shop did it for $40 all new fluids included.

I didn't touch my brake lines either, but after the fluid change, I could feel the brake pedal being firmer like it was a new car again .

I don't cut costs on brakes or tires. My life is worth $40 bucks every four years.
You are going to end up having to open the bleeder screw anyway. You will damaged your Anti-lock system just trying to push the piston back into the caliper.

The easiest method is to clamp off the brake line, open the bleeder, and push the piston back.
no, but it doesn't hurt.
You won't be able to do it without relieving pressure. You will wind up having to bleed the lines.
No

  • How often do you change brake pads and rotars?

If every thing is working right, once a year. It's all based on what type of driving you do. A lot of stop and go,speedy take off and fast stops, carrying a lot weight all the time.

    Good Luck
How often do you change brake pads and rotars?
You should change your brake pads when you begin to hear a screeching noise when you come to a stop. Rotors are a little more difficult to tell. One clue is severe shaking of the car as you are coming to a stop, but often Rotors just need turned and not actually replaced. This can be done at most auto parts store.
How often do you change brake pads and rotars?
That will vary by car, brake pad materials, and especially by the driver's use of the brakes. Some people hit the stinkin' brake pedal for NO reason while driving down the highway - I'm sure they wear their pads down quickly. I prefer to simply ease off the gas and downshift when necessary.

The best way to know if it's needed is to physically examine the thickness of all the pads periodically.
it depends on driving habbits. if you do more highway driving, then you should be able to go more miles. they willstart to squeal when the brake pads get thin.when they do that check them or have them checked at a respectable service center. off hand not knowing any of your driving habbits i would say 40,000mi. (that is high for city driving, low for highway driving). the rotars will last loger as long as they do not warp or you run the brake pads down to bare metal. the rotars can be %26quot;turned%26quot; and go for more miles.
I dont have a specific interval on when to change them. I just drive the car until they are worn. I usually change the front brakes when i hear a squeaking noise while the car is coasting, and the rear brakes when they grind. Sometimes, you are better off buying new rotors instead of turning them. It depends on the vehicle. My GMC van has front rotors that have been cut 2 times, and rear drums that i always replace when changing rear brakes. It is because the rear drums have only under a half an inch of thickness when they are new, and re cutting them is worthless. Drums and rotors have thickness limit. If i would of cut those old drums, i would of possibly been over the limit causing my brake shoes to overspread and blow a wheel cylinder. If you happen to attempt to do the project yourself, you can take the drums or rotors to an auto parts store to get the thickness measured, cut, and to and or get new ones. Good Luck!
twice a yr, depending on how often you drive for pads. roters dont wear as fast, and when you hear a whoop, whoop sound or slight shake in the wheel, get the roters done then

How do you change brake pads for 1990 honda accord ?

Take wheel off, remove caliper( 10mm socket) compress caliper piston with C-clamp or similar, insert new pads, install. If you do not know what you are doing, STOP. Brakes are something NOT to be played with.
How do you change brake pads for 1990 honda accord ?
Buy A hanes auto manual for the year of your car. It will show you how to do it step by step. I would not be without one for any car I own..My oldest is a manual for a 52 Chev. Just one of the cars I owned
How do you change brake pads for 1990 honda accord ?
The manual for your car is nice, but can be costly. The only thing you didn't mention is if it was the rear or front. Do to the year of the vehicle I am going to assume front. You need to start by having the car on a level surface and jack up the end with the problem. Before you do this you need to break the lug nuts loose, do not take them off yet, just break them loose. Make sure to block the wheels opposite the side you are jacking up. Then jack up the car, remove the lug nuts and wheels. After this you will need to remove the caliper. The caliper is held by 2 bolts. After you remove the two bolts, you can take a pry bar, or a heavy screw driver to slide the caliper up and out of the way. Once this is done, you can remove the pads. Then there will be 2 more bolts to break loose on the pad holder. After removing these, you can take the rotors off, get them measured for thickness. If they are too thin, you will need to replace them. If they still have meat on them, you can have them turned and re-surfaced to re-use them. Clean the area with some type of brake clean, which can be picked up at your local automotive store. It will be an aerosol type can around 3 or 4 bucks. You will also need to find something to compress the piston on the caliper. This needs to be done so the new pads will fit and the caliper will slide over the new pads you install. Re-install the pad holder, and I suggest using some locktite on the 2 bolts before you re-install them. Before you add the new pads, your new pads will come with some type of silicon lube. You will need to lube the metal plates that are on the pad holder, so the new pads will slide easily and not stick when the brakes are applied. Also take the bolts out of the caliper, if you didn't already and lube the long parts that go back into the caliper, so the caliper doesn't stick and slides freely when the brakes are applied. Make sure to clean them before lubing them, and use the brake clean you bought. Wipe them down with a dry rag, then lube them. Before you put the pads on, make sure they are the correct ones by putting them up against the old ones to see if they are the same size and type. Then install them. Put the caliper back on, and use a very little bit of locktite on the caliper bolts. Very important!!! Make sure you did not twist the brake line when re-installing the caliper, this will cause you problems later if you twist a line. Re-tighten the bolts, but don't over torque them, you can strip them out, just hand tighten and give them a little more. Then you can start putting the wheels back on. Lower the vehicle, and tighten all the lug nuts. Remove the blocks from the opposite side of the vehicle. That's it, you just did your first break job, correctly and safely. Good luck!!

How do you change brake pads for a 2002 Yamaha R6 motorcycle?

Is there an online manual for motorcycle repairs?
How do you change brake pads for a 2002 Yamaha R6 motorcycle?
--Look at the top of the caliper. There is a pin that goes through the caliper and through the brake pads.

--There is a re-useable cotter pin (clip) that goes through that pin to prevent it from coming out (it's between the outer pad and caliper).

--Remove that pin and the pads come right out the top of the caliper.

--Before removing the pads, use a screwdriver to spread the pads apart (this will push the pistons back into the calipers to make room for the new pads).

--You might have to remove some brake fluid from the master cylinder, to push the pistons into the caliper.

--If you do any work with the master cylinder cover off, cover all painted parts of your bike (brake fluid dissolves paint).

--When you get the pads in, pump the brake lever/pedal to push the pistons out and seat the pads. Top off master cylinder.

--Be careful when you first ride the bike with new pads. They won't work until they're broken in. When you get moving, lightly apply and drag the brakes to score up the pads. You'll know when the pads are properly seated if they are strong enough to lock up either wheel. Careful.

How do you change brake pads for a 2002 Yamaha R6 motorcycle?
Take it to a bike shop. You don't want to get those misadjusted.
    you just do it.

first get the wheel off the bike.

    unbolt the caliper.

    and then replace em.

    its that simple.

its more simple at a shop, like that other dude said, cuz they have the means to lift the bike and get the wheels off really quickly and easily - not because its hard to do.

the best thing to do is make friends with the techs at your local bike shop.

see if you can get one of em to do it for you, after hours, for beer.

    =)
Take it to your nearest bike dealer,if you don't know what your doing you should not be touching the braking system of a 160mph motorcycle.

    Good Luck.

My brakes are squeaking bad and i just changed my brake pads. Anybody know what this could be coming from?

i have a 97 lexus sc400 and i just changed the brake pads but the brakes are still squeaking. Anybody have any ideas on how to stop this? And no they are not cheap brake pads.
My brakes are squeaking bad and i just changed my brake pads. Anybody know what this could be coming from?
maybe you need your rotors turned (resurfaced)
My brakes are squeaking bad and i just changed my brake pads. Anybody know what this could be coming from?
Shady installation job. The dealer manual says you have to either grease the back of brake pads OR get a brake pads with built in shims. The problem is vibration between the pad %26amp; rotor is picked up by the caliper assembly and amplifying the noise. All brake makes noise, so you just have to stop this amplification effect. And you can do this with grease in back of brake pads, or thin layer of brake shim.
probably brake dust, just hose it out that should stops it.
your boots in the back i just paid 300 bucks for a brake job.haha a bj.lol. and my brakes squeke i was pissed and took them back they replaced them with some ACDELCOS. it stopped the squeking in the front but the backs are squeeking it may be the boots. so just some experience. oh and make them test drive it and have them use varying degrees of braking. hard slow apply that kind of stuff. DONT TAKE IT WHEN THEY JUST PUT ON THE GREASE. YOU CANT STOP. that scared the crap out of me.
Make sure you didn't bend the wear indicators ,That's that little piece of metal that looks curved over that's attached to your brake pad. When your brakes wear down this indicator will start making a squealing noise to let you know your brake pads need replacing. These indicators are easily bent so this may be your problem. The indicator metal should not come in contact with your rotors until your brakes are well over half worn

I'm changing my brake pads on a 2002 mustang.?

The Caliper bolts wont screw back in all the way? What happened? The just turn and turn, makes me think they're supposed to screw into a second thread I%26quot;m missing; or not?
I'm changing my brake pads on a 2002 mustang.?
I believe that they screw through so that the caliper will float. You can get a repair manual for around

$10 at advance or auto zone it should tell you if not ask ford
I'm changing my brake pads on a 2002 mustang.?
You may have stripped the bolt, I did that with mine
Just grab them with pliers and pull on them after you back them out a reasonable amount.
you may have crossthreaded but hopefully not. It maybe not lined up perfectly and the bolt is just turning. Try taking a phillips screwdriver or a centerpunch or whatever you can find that will fit in the hole and try wiggling it to line it up with the caliper. get a flashlight and stick your head in there so you can see. If it is crossthreaded you can measure the bolt diameter and pitch with a pitch gage from a tap and die set. Take the right size tap and rethread. Hopefully it's just not lined up but it can always be fixed. Hope this helps.
Check out BrenSpeed.com http://www.brenspeed.com/ My brother owns a mustang and he's always raving about this site and how great their selection is. Half of the Christmas gifts he wants are from this site. You may want to visit that site if you are ever on the hunt for anything for your car.

  • How often to change the brake pads?

I drive a Nissan sentra 04,I am hearing a constant scratching sound from the front wheels,The maintanance manual says it is the audible reminder to change the brake pads,How long(avg in Kms) a brake pad lasts in city driving??
How often to change the brake pads?
it all depends on the material making up the pad, if its cheap semi metallic combined with persistent sudden braking, you can run down pads in less than 6 months, invest on carbon ceramic pads and don't do sudden braking.

Drain brake fluid before changing break pads yamaha aerox 50cc ?

do you need to drain brake fluid before changing break pads on a yamaha aerox 50cc ped?
Drain brake fluid before changing break pads yamaha aerox 50cc ?
    No

Clean fluid reservoir cap and remove it after packing lots of old rags around it.

Spilt break fluid melts paint and plastic.

Remove old pads, push back pistons slowly and the fluid level in the reservoir will rise and could overspill.

Fit new pads, refit fluid reservoir cap, pump brake lever slowly a few times. Job done
Drain brake fluid before changing break pads yamaha aerox 50cc ?
only if you are going to change the fluid.

no not really unless its like over 2 years old

keep old pads in use a large screw driver to level the pistons back in to the caliper

    take out pads

put copper grease on back of new pads ( dont get any on front of pads )

put back to gether pump brakes for a min

    Changing Mustang brake pads?

Hi, i just installed some new ceramic brake pads on my mustang(front pads) and now when im coasting, the car is braking just a little bit... i can tell because when im going down hill the car slows down...any help as to why its doing this?

is the brake caliper releasing all the way? in other words is the piston in the brake caliper working fine?

Your brake caliper is sticking? The engine is slowing it down?
you probably have a brake caliper hanging up. take both calipers off and clean the slides where they bolt up to.

How do you change the brake pads on a 2004 chevy silverado?

ive never done anything with the brakes. i know very minimal stuff about mechanical but i want to learn and i need new pads. i basically know how to rotate tires and change the oil and have minor knowledge of parts. Will i be able to do it or am i better off taking it in? i not only want to save money, but to learn more about working on trucks. thanks
How do you change the brake pads on a 2004 chevy silverado?
I would buy a service manual and rock and roll!!!

The fun you'll have with Silverados includes, slide pins %26quot;frozen%26quot; in the brackets. (Aftermarket parts stores are carrying the brackets now, if its stuck, forget the heat go right to the bracket, not very much and will save you a ton of fustration.) I have an 03 that I love but I've seen the same problems with all Chevy trucks especially the rears!

Bank on replacing rotors in the rear pretty much every brake job if its still disc, they went back to drum brakes for 04 which I think are better for a truck especially when pulling my 4,000 lb boat!

    Good Luck

Its a simple job. Go to the popular mechanics web site. there is a link, That will show you how. I just walked my nieghbor through the process on his 01 chevy truck. The tech hasn't changed in years, Took him two hours. He needed a socket set, a c clamp, and 45 dollars in parts. Cheap and easy.
if you don,t know then you better not try .

Im trying to change the rear brake pads and I cant get the drums off.Ive beat the drums with a rubber mallet and I still cant move them.Any suggestions?
Im trying to change my brake pads on my 2006 saturn vue?
i do agree on th e brake but one of the things you might have to do is adjust the brakes. the adjuster will be behind a little oval hole on the back. it will be tough to get them off. once you get them off then you will have to readjust your pads so that when you spin the drum you have little resistance while spinning it.
Im trying to change my brake pads on my 2006 saturn vue?
    Take the emergency brake off
is there a slot in the front or behind the backing plate to adjust the shoes in away from the drums? here,s what i do when the drum won,t come off. i put a big screwdriver behind the drum and backing plate, pull out on the drum some and hit the drum with a hammer. try that and see if it will come off.

Changed brake pads and now they make a grinding noise.?

I just put new brake pads on my car and I also turn the rotors but now they make a grinding noise when I am not stepping on the brake pedal. I also bleed the brake lines.

    What could be causing this?
Changed brake pads and now they make a grinding noise.?
    change the rotors....

also spray on some brake cleaner to rid of any debris or rust.

Depending on the quality of the pads it may grind for sometime as they are new.

Find a quiet street and heat your brakes up by accelerating and making hard stops by pumping on the brakes..do this for a few minutes.
Changed brake pads and now they make a grinding noise.?
Are they on correctly? Maybe dirt or crud caught between pad and rotor. Take a look before damage happens,
It's because the mexican put them on wrong.
DIY and no idea what you are doing or what to look for. Replace the rotors , don`t machine them. Rotors are so cheap that its not worth turning them. Also you may have left something loose. take it all apart and see what you missed. And let me know where you live , so I can stay away
The only thing that comes to mind is loose caliper bolts. Check them and make sure they're tight.
You bought the wrong brake pads! You could bleed the brake lines for a week but it won't stop semi-metallic of full metallic brake pads from grinding the surfaces off the brake rotors. Today's automobiles have ceramic pads which are quieter, cleaner and will not destroy brake rotors.

The only thing you might try is removing the brake pads and clean both sides with CRC Brake Cleaner. Coat the steel side of each brake pad with an .090 thickness of CRC Brake Quiet. This product is a high temperature silicone RTV compound that remains flexable to stop brake harmonics or noise. NAPA and Carquest has these products.

Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?

I have been advised by a friend that a garage should always undertake any brake maintenence as the insurance company may not pay out in the event of an accident.

Is this hearsay or is this the case? I have looked accross the net for an answer but can only find HOW TO guides for people to work on thir own brakes.

I spent a year working at a garage but that was back in 2005 and I want to know how the ground lies nowadays.

    Cheers.
Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
dude by the same token, some shops shouldnt be allowed to change a flat on a wheel barrow!i wouldnt let em change a dollar.anyway fix your brakes.that is pure bs.

what if you put your own spare tire on and got in a wreck?same thing.
Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
No, I have been changing my brakes for 35 years. The only way anything could happen is if you really did a bad job and they didn't work because of your fault, %26quot;Gross Negligence%26quot;. Even then how could anybody prove you did it?

If your scared, pay to have it done, if you competent, go for it. Get a book, follow directions, then take the $80 you saved and take out your girlfriend/wife to dinner.
If you take your time %26amp; know what you are doing. why not. Hey, it's your own ride so go for it.

About the accident event, forget it.
Get a Haynes Manual or use this site. http://www.haynes.com/products/sfID1/3ma鈥?/a>
I think the question is more %26quot;Do I trust my skills as a mechanic enough to change my own brakes?%26quot;. If the answer is 'yes', then get to work. ;-)

In the event of an accident, I think it is more a matter of finding someone to point a finger at (say, if someone wanted to sue) than it is a matter of insurance. Call your agent and see what they say. you may also want to contact your state's insurance omsbudsman's office if you're really concerned. Stuff like that is why you have an insurance omsbudsman.
you can do any repairs to your own car, that's why %26quot;haynes%26quot; manuals are popular.

The problem occurs if there is an accident and its proven to be some thing you did or changed that is found to be the cause, the insurance company will then not pay out.

The %26quot;classic%26quot; has to be where a car had a crash (no one injured / killed) and the insurance paid out.

The insurance company paid out then sued the person who worked on the car, the person who worked on the car was a friend of the car owner, the car owner told the insurance company all of his friends details.

The friend had written in to a national newspaper asking where he stood, and do the insurance company have a right to sue him.

The answer is yes they can sue, there is nothing he can do other than pay, he should not have done the job in the first place because he is not qualified and as such is not insured to do the job he did.

I don't suppose the two are friends anymore.

So what your friend said in the first place is true, but most people ignore it.
You have enough knowledge of mechanics to enable you to complete the repair yourself. There can be little doubt your insurance would be uneffected by doing a home repair.

You will save a lot of cash by DIY. I do it myself without any problem as its a simple enough job with most vehicles.
Of course you can change your own discs and pads! Otherwise, it wouldn't be legal to sell tools and Haynes manuals, and magazines such as Practical-Classics, which I get every month, would be full of criminal %26quot;how-to-do-it%26quot; guides!

Just be really careful - ANY driver of ANY vehicle, has a legal responsibility to make sure it is ROAD-WORTHY every time it is used - an MOT certificate does not mean that car is legal for a year - it means it passed that test on that day, but you still have to maintain it, and keep it in a safe order.
You'll have got the message, it's perfectly okay to do the work yourself. The only possible issue is that if you made a mess of it and had an accident as a result the insurers might conceivably say that your car wasn't properly maintained and use that as a way to wriggle out of it. If you do it properly there's no problem at all.

Your friend has a point in that if you're not certain it is indeed best to get a professional to do it for your own sake - you can't afford to make a mistake with brakes. By all means do some research and go ahead if you're confident.
Methinks your friend is on a different planet. Haynes manuals details brake pad and shoe changing.

Ask your friend to quote the instance where this occurred. Bet he can't because it's a figment of his imagination.
No you can do it yourself, a lot of people do. Get a service manual if you like ( Chilton or Haynes ) that you can get at the same place you buy your new parts. And when you do the job leave one side together so you have a reference to look at as you do the other side and you'll be fine.
your friend is wrong about that.you don,t need a garage but it would be nice this time of year but in the summer just park on a flat surface and start working.i changed my brakes right beside my house. if you have the tools and know-how just start on it. so you might cut your finger, just put a band-aid on and keep working.
The only advice I can give was that given by my late dad - do the job correctly, be methodical %26amp; check everything you do with a good repair manual ( Haynes etc ). Nowadays it is good practice to take a few digital photos of the correct position of the components in situ before you start dismantling. I have changed the brakes ( pads, discs %26amp; shoes) on most of my cars over the years %26amp; every one passed the MOT test afterwards.
WHAT A LOAD OF BOVINE EXCREMENT, i have changen my own and all my families car brakes, cylinders, discs, pads, etc for years now, i spent 拢20 on the proper wind back tool ( this does make things a hell of lot easier) rather trying to bodge it ( thinking your car needs pistons pushed back in this manner) as long as you, chock the wheels, jack up and support car on axle stands then go for it, as there cannot be any proof you have not done it your self.

Just rembember to pump brakes before going anywhere then test them a few times to be sure, as for the 拢50 - 拢100 labour charge keep it in your pocket, the way petrol is going you will need it lol, all the best have fun working on the cars, i do.

Changing brake pads are easy. All you have to do is go on youtube a fine a video that shows how BRAKE PADS are changed. It doesn't really matter whether it is for your car or not. You really want the know the process of changing pads. The only thing that I would stress is to do one side at a time, so you have something to look at if you forget how that assembly should look.

If you have drum brakes, I would pay a shop to do it, because brake that only need to be calibrated and on top of that, the brakes are run by a system of springs and reinstalling the springs can be a real pain.

How do you change brake pads and rotors on a 1996 Chevy Lumina?

Steering and brakes are the two things you DO NOT want to mess up, so if you don't know for sure what you are doing, take it to a skilled mechanic.
How do you change brake pads and rotors on a 1996 Chevy Lumina?
Easy job. Once you remove the front wheels remove the caliper after using a c-clamp to squeeze the piston back into it so that the pads will loosen. Once the caliper is off put the c-clamp back on it and squeeze the piston all the way back into the bore %26quot;slowly%26quot; with the top off the master cylinder so that the fluid will go back to the master cylinder and the caliper will be back in the starting position and able to accept the new pads with full amount of friction material on them. As to the rotor, if the caliper bracket is in the way then remove the two large bolts that hold it on and the rotor slips off the lugs and new one reinstalls the same way. There is a special type socket that is used for removing the GM caliper bolts from the bracket and if you don't have a wrench that will fit in the hole properly then all auto parts stores carry these. They are very common and cheap to purchase at only a couple of bucks or so. After replacing the rotor and caliper bracket, install the new pads into the caliper and bracket and once the caliper is back bolted down slowly pump the brake pedal with the cap loosely sitting on top the master cylinder and the pedal only going about halfway down. Do this until you get a good hard pedal again. That's all there is to it. :-)
How do you change brake pads and rotors on a 1996 Chevy Lumina?
mohavedes is right. But if I'm not mistaken the bolt is actually a TORX bolt. The proper size is T-60. If you've never done this DON'T DO IT. These bolts are SOOO tight its almost impossible to take. And if you do take them off you better damn make sure it is GOOD and TIGHT. Otherwise the bolts will come loose and fall off while you're driving. Don't mean to scare you, but I don't want to be driving around someone familiar with brakes and they did it themselves. Besides front brake jobs usually cost under $180 including labor and parts with a warranty.

  • How long do i have left to change my brake pads?

im stuck in new york right now, and need to get to ohio. my brakes make a horrible grinding sound when i brake, but its only been doing it about 5 days. i bought brake pads for 20 bucks, but it would take 60 to change them, which i just cant afford. i need all of my money for gas. i need to get down to kentucky which is 700 miles away. i wont be making to much stops though, not anymore than i would in town. would i be okay if i just went ahead and left? i have people that can do it for free once i get there.
How long do i have left to change my brake pads?
If you drive any further you will need to replace the rotors as well as the pads. A LOT MORE EXPENSIVE.
How long do i have left to change my brake pads?
If they are grinding then they are pretty bad. But if you have no money then I would drive slow and instead of using your brakes try slowing down by downshifting and then use the brakes as little as possible. Good luck!.
No! you shouldn't drive it. It's too risky and someone or yourself can get hurt. By now your rotors are probably messed up. You should have someone %26quot;western union%26quot; you some money and then have it fixed. Let them know that you get paid tomorrow and you can pay them back with additional amount for their troubles helping you. If your rotors aren't messed up that bad yet. Then go drive by a garage and let them know your situation and see if they can assist you with replacing the brake pads while you do most of the work. It's not that hard (socket wrench, two bolts, clamp, brake quiet and pads,) but then again if your not familiar with cars or mechanically inclined then don't do it! Brakes should be done by a professional. Other than that the only other option is to see if you can leave it their over night someplace and find another means of transportation home with the money you have left (bus, taxi). Come back the next day with your funds and take it to a garage. Best of Luck!
Yeah you should be ok if you use the gearbox to slow down and hardly touch the brakes.

If the disks are scored you can grind them by jacking up and running the engine but if they're not too bad new pads will quickly bed in

Your breaks are borderline and wearing out the disk but will get you one more journey dude
OK, look at the maps again, try to plan your route on as many highways as possible, soft even braking were possible and you should be fine.

    Good Luck!
absolutely, go ahead and take off to Kentucky. Just remember when you have to get off the highway or slow down for a construction zone, or someone cuts off your lane in traffic, and you go to use the brakes, and the vehicle pulls hard (like pulls you into the ditch), or the pedal goes straight to the floor and you can't stop,.or you rear-end someone and hurt them or yourself, or you kill a construction worker--hey that's ok as long as your insurance for your vehicle is paid in full and you have enough coverage to not get sued to the gills and end up owing $20 million on a lawsuit---sure lets's get to kentucky. the small amount of money you spend(and mean that is cheap) to get this accomplished will be long, long forgotten if any of these or other mishaps should happen to you--think--don't chance your life or someone elses
get a towtruck and have it towed to this guy. Chances are, if you try to take the highway with those brakes, someone's gonna get hurt or killed. If you have AAA plus you can ghave it towed for free.
The factor here is not money its safety you should not drive this car knowing there is a brake defect as the owner of the vehicle you are legally responsible for the maintenance of the car. The car should be serviced at regular intervals which includes checking the brakes, the law will come down on you very hard in the case of the vehicle being involved in an accident and if there should be any fatality you will be looking at a jail term so a driver you must be responsible this is a loaded gun and can kill you or other innocent people you want that on your conscious.

Sounds like the rotors or brake discs as they are called in UK are already damaged which need not of happened if you had just fitted the new brake pads in time ! The car now has a serious brake deficiency and should NOT BE DRIVEN

    Stay safe good luck
i wouldn't drive on those break...same thing happened to me and it cost me $800.00 to get my break back to normal because I waited too long..sorry =(

I would think not the most expensive but middle of the road someone who can gaurtee their work in writing. You should see about spending a couple extra bucks on the actual brake pad 's that they put on the car Because the more expensive brake pads usually are better quality and last longer and stop faster than the cheapO kind .

Saves money in the long run.

    P.S.

If you want to go fast you need to be able to stop fast

How can I change brake pads on my car by myself? Is there a website that tells how to do that?

Brake pads are not that hard to change, but instead of a website, you should go to an auto supply store and get the workshop manual for your car model/year range. Before you buy it, look through the section on changing brake pads, and see if it is something you are willing to do. Just remember, you life and the life of your passengers may depend on your brakes functioning correctly. Also, if you have it professionaly done by an honest shop, they will tell you if you really need to replace any other brake parts, like the rotors.
How can I change brake pads on my car by myself? Is there a website that tells how to do that?
If you have never done it before I suggest you not try it on your own. Your life depends on it. Maybe you can find someone who is familiar with the job.

Your best bet is just pay the mechanic to do it.

    Good luck!
How can I change brake pads on my car by myself? Is there a website that tells how to do that?
    What grandma g said.
first take off the tire, in the back of the metal wheel there's a tube, unscrew the tube and slide the pad off, replace it snap back and replace the tube, replace the tire and pupm the air out
Lets get this right, you do want to do it yourself, why? cheaper or you want the mechanical know how? It is not a good idea, look for a friendly mechanic and tell him you want to see it done, please, do not risk your (and others) life by doing yourself till you really know what you are doing, if done incorrectly the braking won't be even or safe. I do admire you for wanting to do it, just learn how first, then get checked before you go out.
When you buy brakes they come with instructions in the box.

Ask whom ever sell's you the brakes what tools you will need...
sure, what better way for you to learn how to be a mechanic than to start out on some thing that if you mess up you can get someone killed.

not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
you can get it at www.haynes.com, www.gearheadcafe.com you can get cd on certain vehicles there. or go to your local parts store and buy a repair manual there.

How do I change my brake pads to a 93' Mercury Sable?
i suggest you get a Haynes or Chiltons manual. it will save you a lot of headache in the long run, plus it gives you details you can't get here
If you have no idea what you are doing then dont touch it. Take it to the shop. You do realize that the brakes are what stop your car from going into a tree right???? If you want to learn how to do it you get a friend to come over and show you how its done. But do not im telling you do not hold on let me rephrase that DO NOT touch them no matter what you read online or out of some book. Cause your instructions will tell you what you need to know but will not tell you what to look for if other stuff is messed up
if you want them done you should go to a professional because if you do them and something goes wrong you will end up paying more. when you do get them done make sure you do the front brake and the back one done.
Remove the wheel, then the 2 bolts holding the caliper to the bracket, remove outer pad, use a c-clamp press piston back in remembering to open master cylinder cap. when piston is allthe way back in u put in all the new parts and remember to put all anti rattle clips and hardware back in as b4

How to change the brake pads on a 1988 volvo 740 turbo?

Has anyone who is a do it your selfer tried to change the brake pads on their Volvo 740 DL turbo sedan? I think I can do it but looking for tips and checks and dos and don'ts.
How to change the brake pads on a 1988 volvo 740 turbo?
i worked on Volvos for 5 years going through college. the brakes are some of the easiest in the industry to change. very straight forward, no special tools required. you may need an extra large screwdriver or even a small crowbar to gently push (or squeeze) the caliper pistons back into the calipers so that the new (fatter) brake pads will fit. if i remember correctly, there are two pistons and pushing on one will sometimes push the other one out, so try pushing both at the same time or going back and forth from one to the other so they go back into the caliper evenly. if one gets pushed all the way out, then you are left with a mess of brake fluid on floor and the need to bleed the brakes after your done, which you can avoid. lastly, Volvo used two different kinds of brake assemblies. one made by Girling and the other name eludes me, but they are distinctly different and not interchangeable. i could tell them apart simply by sight, but you will probably want to bring in the old pad to the parts store to match them up with the new ones as there is NO WAY to tell which ones your car has without physically looking at them.

    good luck.

Would having front brake pads changed cause front wheels to go out of alignment?

I just had new front brake pads put on my 99 civic and now it kinda feels a little shaky in the steering wheel at higher, highway speeds..do u think it needs an alignment now?
Would having front brake pads changed cause front wheels to go out of alignment?
Did they do a tire rotation with the brake job? If so then maybe the rears, now up front were a little out of balance. Or if the only put the brake pads in and did not turn, (resurface) the rotors that would cause that too.

It sounds to me you need all four wheels balanced. Or if this shaking happens when you apply the brakes then the rotors need to be turned. It will not effect the alignment and the alignment ( bad or good )will not cause a shake in the wheel. Good Luck.
Would having front brake pads changed cause front wheels to go out of alignment?
no connection between the two, this should not happen
brakes dont effect allignment at all. and even if your alignment was out it would not cause your wheels to shake. just pull one way or another. it sounds to me like your mechanic lefts something loose. go back and make them fix it.
Nothing that affects the pads has anything to do with alignment. But if you had a loose balance weight, the moving of the wheels from the brake job could have knocked one loose.

I'd try a wheel balance before an alignment, or get them both done in one go.
The pads do not change your alignment. If your rotors are warped, during a brake application the steering wheel will pull left or right, and or , shake. If the car pulls while driving without stepping on the brakes,,, you need an alignment. If the car shakes without stepping on the brakes, you should have your tires balanced, might have a bent wheel. Hope this helps
brake pad change should not affect alignment. simple things first: check to make sure all the lug nuts are tight. then have the balance checked on the front tires. it is possable that a wheel weight was knocked off.

How do i change the front brake pads on a honda civic type r?

How do i change the front brake pads on a honda civic type r?
Some people have great confidence in garages!

After a major service my car did 4 (FOUR) miles before a grinding noise occur ed due to there being NO LINING on the rear brakes. Another time they adjusted the rear brake clearance by tightening the handbrake cable. When loaded this pulled the brakes on - gently - and heated up the drums to the point where the grease in the bearing ran out into the drum ad ruined the race and the linings - no rear brakes!

Most main dealer garages rely on company car repairs and many of them cannot even blow up the tyres to the correct - or even the same - pressures. Believe me I have checked.

And so on and so on.

If you must use a garage go to a local - one man - one. He relies on doing a good job or his name gets round and he goes out of business.

Get a Haynes manual and have confidence.

  • Is it hard to change front brake pads on a 96 Taurus?

I am decently inclined with vehicle maintenance, but I have never done brakes. I do my own oil changes on the vehicle. I have read some internet articles on the process, but do I loosen the bleeder screw then push the caliper piston in? or do I just remove the brake master cylinder cap then push the caliper piston in to make room for the new pads? I have read 2 different processes.
Is it hard to change front brake pads on a 96 Taurus?
Don't loosen the bleeder, just open the master cylinder. It isn't possible to get it wrong but if you want a step by step with diagrams just to make it a little easier email me at kormanmike@yahoo.com

Just a side note, never open the bleeder unless you are changing the lines or you ran the master empty and sucked air into the line.

And when you are finished remember to pump the brakes until they are hard before taking it out of park.
Is it hard to change front brake pads on a 96 Taurus?
ummm...brakes aren't something you should learn to do on the internet..especially since you got two completley different answers. if you change your oil wrong, you blow your engine and buy a new one. if you change yer brakes wrong, you could die. and i read somewhere on the internet that a new life costs way more than brake service from a qualified tech. :p
    Here's what you do.

    1. Remove the two bolts holding the caliper piston on the caliper bracket.

    2. Remove the old pads.

3, Put one of the old pads against the inside of the piston (The %26quot;O%26quot; shaped thing), then, using a C clamp, return the piston to where it was.

    4. Install the new pads, referring to the old ones for correct positioning

    5. Put the caliper piston back on the bracket, put the bolts in by hand first, then zip em up and maker sure the piston is secure.

    6. Put the wheels back on the car, start the car while the parking brake is on and pump the brake pedal until the pedal is hard.

    Easy as pie.

How would I change the brake pads in my honda accord?

I know you need to raise your car and take off the wheel...from there it's pretty straightforward I'm assuming.

I have socket wrenches is that all I need?
How would I change the brake pads in my honda accord?
I would suggest not trying this without hands on supervision. There are many things that can go wrong and you will not know how to deal with it.

As was stated the rotors may need to be turned. If the old pads went to metal the rotors will have to be turned or replaced.

The calipers have to be collapsed before the new pads can be installed. On some vehicles the calipers can just be compressed but some have self adjusting calipers that has to be turned(screwed) in. Care must be taken so as not to damage the master cylinder.

There are a lot of times that the brakes will have to be bled. If this is not performed properly the results can be catastrophic.

I don't know how old you are but there are some things , that if messed with, can shorten a life span. This would be a particular person's business but if your brakes go out at an intersection it might involve the lady and kids you knock into on coming traffic.
How would I change the brake pads in my honda accord?
sure do it yourself and have fun too. and remember when you make a mistake it will only cause you to crash and /or kill someone else. if the rotors are undersized, you have to get new ones..if they have excessive run-out then they need to be turned. if you have to ask people how to perform vehicle maintenance then you don't need to be doing some of it that will possible affect other people. pay a professional. then the risk is on them not you.

If you plan on doing work on your car yourself, be smart about it. Get a manual for your car. Chilton's are the best, you can usually get the right one at your auto store, and it will come in handy for all the little things down the road that will eventually go bad. Dude you have to make sure things are right...those are your brakes...spring for the book ..they run about 16.00 dollars.

Why does the Antilock indicator light show. This started recently after changing the brake pad?

It comes on after once the car is in motion and it has been driven for a about 5 to 10 minutes. It was not showing before untill after a replaced the front brake pads.
Why does the Antilock indicator light show. This started recently after changing the brake pad?
You may have knocked the ABS sensor out of adjustment. Or you may have kicked up some metal filings onto the sensor.

Check the air gap between the sensor and the tone ring. Also, unplug and re-plug the sensor harness connectors.
Why does the Antilock indicator light show. This started recently after changing the brake pad?
Did you clean the sensor? If not you may want to do that, also clean the pick up ring behind the rotor that the sensor gets it's signal from. Make sure when you installed the pads that you didn't damage the sensor wiring.

  • After changing front brake pads, brakes are locked up.?

I have a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan. My friend (who has done brakes plenty of times) helped me change the front brake pads. We tried pushing the cylinder all the way in (after we found the lock up), but when I turn the car on and shift into any gear it just sits there - if I gun it, the wheels jump like the brakes are held on tight and the car will move a little. Any help?
After changing front brake pads, brakes are locked up.?
Assuming the problem is hydraulic, try opening the bleed valves on the two front calipers. After a tablespoon or so of fluid has come out - enough to ensure any pent up pressure is relieved - see how the system behaves. You will want to jack up the wheel and test it that way rather than by putting it in gear, which will require you to step on the brakes to shift into gear. This step of bleeding is just to identify whether the problem is hydraulic or solid mechanical.
After changing front brake pads, brakes are locked up.?
Sounds like you may have gotten incorrect brake pads? How easy did the pistons push back in? Did you clean and lube the caliper contact surfaces? Is the E-Brake on? Are the pads installed correctly?
sounds like the pistons are scored and not releasing,,,

or somthing is not put back togather properly????

    good luck,,,,,,,,,,,
Stating the obvious first. Did you have the emergency brakes on? Or did you do it safely and put chocks behind the rear wheels? Sorry, I have to ask.

Jack it up again and see if they spin freely. If you didn't completely reset the calipers to their full in position, they sometimes will lock up. Also, while doing that, did you allow for the fluid returning into the reservoir? If your lines were dirty, you may of pushed dirty fluid back into the system and a master cylinder will fail shut.

Try those first, then add more of what you did.

How often do i have to change the brake pads for 2008 highlander?

I am thinking about purchasing the 2008 Toyota Highlander 2wd with 30500 miles on it.

I am wondering how soon i should expect to change the brake pads. Also tires etc..

it is the private party purchase with 60000 miles factory warranty.
How often do i have to change the brake pads for 2008 highlander?
40,000 miles is average. But I've seen vehicles go as long at 70, depending on the driver. Tires, if they've been rotated on schedule should last about 50,000. Expect to do a brake job within the next year.
How often do i have to change the brake pads for 2008 highlander?
I believe this vehicle has similar brakes to the tacomma 4 runner and they were a bit fast on wear 30,000 miles would be good. alignment and ballance are criticle to long tire wear as is correct tire preasure. the car may have a different air preasure recomendation in the manual than does the tire as different manufacturers set different recomendations. go by the tire! if it says 40 max cold this means in the morning before driving this tire should be no higher than 40 lbs preasure. this is a max number expecting as heavy a load to be on the tires as they are designed to hold up. most cars and trucks are fine with 3 to 5 lbs less under normal conditions.

1- pull the 2--5/16 hex bolts

2- remove the caliper, remove the pads and compress the caliper with a c clamp

3- remove the dust cap with a screwdriver carefully, remove the safety pin and set it aside, remove the retainer and nut

4- twist the rotor to release the bearing to the outer one and install only the nut a few turns

5- pull the rotor to remove the inner bearing and seal

6- repack the inner bearing with grease, install the bearing and tap the seal back in

7- install the rotor, repack the outer bearing, install, put washer in place and snug nut into place, look up tightening specs, install castle nut and install cotter pin

9- install the pads in reverse as you taken them out

Changing the brake pads on a 2003 Toyota Tacoma?

I tried to change the brake pads on my truck and I removed the 4 long bolts going through the caliper, after doing so brake fluid started to pour out. So, therefore, I replaced the bolts. At this point what do I need to do to replace the pads and restore the caliper to it's normal working order? I have to press my brake pedal to the floor and even then it doesn't stop properly. My pedal is now spongy and has no pressure.
Changing the brake pads on a 2003 Toyota Tacoma?
Unfortunately, the first answerer is right... you now have to bleed the brakes which requires two people. On the back side of the caliper, you will see something that looks like a little stud sticking out with a hole in the middle of it and a nut on it. This is actually the bleed valve the other guy mentioned.

The idea is to crack this open while someone slowly presses the brake pedal all the way to the floor in order to push the air out. Once they reach the floor, they should hold it there while you close the valve. Repeat this process until all that comes out is fluid. It's best to close the valve mid-stroke of the brake pedal on the final time. Check the fluid level in the reservoir before and after this procedure.

Once you get things working right again, it's time to change the pads properly...

Although I never had a Tacoma, I've had a Camry and a Tercel and both cars had similar calipers. I can't remember what size, but in both cases all I needed to remove the calipers was a metric Allen wrench and to remove two large Allen bolts.

Once you get the old pads off, you have to spread the caliper open before you can get it back on with the new pads (since the new pads will be thicker than the old ones). Repair manuals will tell you to open the bleed valve to do this, but then you risk getting air in the line again. I like to use a big metal c-clamp to squeeze the calipers and force the brake fluid back into the reservoir... some people pry them apart with a large screwdriver, but I find the c-clamp works so much better.

Once they are spread, just slip the new pads into place (they usually have a spring-like retainer to hold them) and then slip the caliper back over the disc and bolt it down. As long as you didn't open the bleed valve to spread the calipers, then you won't have to bleed the brakes.
Changing the brake pads on a 2003 Toyota Tacoma?
you are now going to have to bleed all the air out of the system. There are bleeder valves on the caliper. You will need someone to push the pedal while you open the bleeder valve. Have them hold the brake till you re tighten the bleeder valve. Keep doing this till tou get no more air bubbles.

How do you change front brake pads 96 previa toyota?
Pretty much like any disc brake vehicle. open the brake fluid reservoir and %26quot;suck out%26quot; some of the fluid so as it is down to the low line. place a rag over the reservoir opening - do not cap it. jack or raise the car and remove the front wheels. use a suitable tool to pry back the calipers - do not scratch the brake rotors.they are probably floating calipers so remove the one bolt and rotate them away. replace the pads and reverse the procedure. if it is a fixed caliper (which i dont think it is) you have to pry back both sides. (this is why you take fluid out of the reservoir - otherwise it overflows.) install the new pads and away you go. pump up the pedal, top up the reservoir.

I am going to Autozone at lunch to buy brake pads for my 2006 Ford Mustang. I need them asap and do not have time to make an appointment at a mechanic.....I was wondering if I needed a certain tool to change these?? I used to have a grand prix that only a certain wrench or tool would open the area where the brake pads were. Does anyone have this type of car and know the answer?? or do I just buy the brake pads and hope that I have all of the right toosl at home.
Changing the brake pads on a 2006 Ford Mustang...Please help!?
Not sure if the caliper bolt is metric or not. I just did my Dad's Boneville (2004) and it had 15mm's. You'll be OK if you had a set of both systems inches and metric. Even better if you have cubes and open wrenches (if they are really thight. Also, buy a caliper expander wrench. It cost like $10 bucks and it will save you time re-opening the calipers so you can re-position into the rotors once the new pads are placed. Remember to remove the lid of the brake fluid reservoir so the air goeas out that way. By doing this, you don't have tobleed them... Good luck!
Changing the brake pads on a 2006 Ford Mustang...Please help!?
You need a brake tool to compress the piston back so you can put the pads in. For the rear you need this special tool cause the rears twist back in not push. Other then that i think thats it, this is what i need for my 96 but im assuming they are the same for the 05's also.
yes u will need some tools for it jus ask the guys at the autoparts store they will lend u the tool if u dont have it.

Do I need to change my brake pads or whats going on?

I have a 2006 Civic. The front drivers side tire seems to be emitting a scraping sound. It goes away when I come to a stop, it doesn't get worse or anything. It does it about once everytime I drive, then I hit the brakes and it goes away.

Do I need to change my brake pads?
Do I need to change my brake pads or whats going on?
The brakes have a wear indicator that makes a scraping sound when the brakes are due to be replaced.

If you don't replace them, the pads wear down to the metal and start to wear on the rotor making a scraping sound. Most likely it needs brake work.

If you jack the car to check it, you will need put blocks under it. I know people that have died when cars fell on the while on a jack. Do not get under a car on a jack!!!! Get help if you don't know what you are doing.

You should get someone familiar with brakes to look at it. I know too many women that have taken cars to a mechanic and been cheated because the mechanic expects they don't know about cars. It is better to know before you get to the mechanic what you need. I have even seen them show parts that don't belong to the car, telling them it needs to be replaced. Take an experienced person with you. Don't blindly trust the mechanic. Unfortunately there are some crooks out there and it can easily cost you $1000 or more.
Do I need to change my brake pads or whats going on?
maybe, jack up the car and take a look. spin the tire by hand and see what is scrapping.
pass time to change just pads when you hear it scraping yes but now you have to have rotors turn or replace,,more you drive it the more it cost to fix.. drive it to a shop and have it check
It definitely sounds like the brakes if it is making a scraping sound. And it sounds like scraping, your brakes may be really bad and the pads are actually scraping the roders.

yes change the brake pads. the sraping/squeling your hearing is a small warning bar on the brake pad tht pretty much says change me the pads almost gone.

and change it asap because the more it scrapes the worse the rotors get
Sounds like a sticking Caliper. This means when you are not braking the pads are still lightly touching the Disk. The usual sulution is to clean the brakes or consider getting them serviced. On such a new car its probabaly best to get a main dealer to check them.
It could just be rust on your brake pads or your rotors. It happens if you don't drive your car much and you live someplace with any amount of humidity. Rust on the pads or rotors will cause your brakes to make noise the first time (or couple of times) you use them when you get in your car and go somewhere.

To be on the safe side, however, you should have someone you trust check it. Don't go to a brake shop because they'll tell you that you need new brakes. Ask someone you know that knows about cars to take a look at it, or if you have an honest mechanic, take it to him/her. That way you'll know for sure if you need a brake job.
when brakes get close to needing replaced they have a piece of metal that squeals a little to warn you that brakes need replaced it is a safety feature so that you still have some brake pad left and can get them fixed before you damage the rotor
if it,s just on 1 side, it might be a caliper hanging up. better get it looked after. you probably could tell by removing the wheel.

I got a Clymer manual for my bike. It was the best $25 investment I made on my bike.

A Clymer manual for this bike is only about $23 + shipping. This manual will pay for itself the first time you use it.

This is much better than asking strangers on the Internet how to do something. How could you know if what they tell you is correct?

A good maintenance manual will have step by step procedures on how to correctly do this task. This way, you can get the job done right. And yes, the manual will have pictures.

Have a wheel chalk handy for the rear tires %26amp; perhaps a set of jack stands.

A basic wrench assortment %26amp; a %26quot;C%26quot; clamp to compress the caliper pistons back. You might want some break lube or anti-seize and stop squeak for the pad to piston caliper area.

If your new shoes didn't come with hardware make sure the old stuff is in good condition.
    10mm and-or 7/16%26quot; wrench

    long screwdriver prybar

    c clamp

long zip ties for holding the caliper while you get the rotor.

    brake fluid

    wheel chock

    antiseaze

You will need a set of sockets with ratchet and possibly extensions, screwdrivers ( slot and phillips), possibly a set of allen wrenches, a C- clamp large enough to depress the plunger in the brake cylinder, also some open end wrenches.

How do I change the front brake pads on a KF Ford Laser?

I want to know if there is anything to be careful of before my partner changes the brake pads on our car.
How do I change the front brake pads on a KF Ford Laser?
Well first off don't use just a jack also use jack stands ive seen many people

just jack up a car with a floor jack then get under it and get crushed and or killed

seen them both make sure your partner uses jack stands which are pretty cheap

compared to your life, as for the brakes themselves simple to replace first off

you will need to open master cylinder if the fluid is low don't fill it generally low fluid means worn brakes unbolt calipers which is the housing that holds the pads in the housing is a piston with a rubber gasket you will be to get a piston

compressor tool or large pair of channel locks and compress the piston all the way back in other wise your going to be hard pressed to get new pads in as you compress the piston the fluid level should rise back to full mark brakes are a sealed system if there was a leak brakes won't work well brake pedal will just slowly hit the floor boards when compressing pistons use rags

on the channel locks teeth so you don't poke a hole in the gaskets around the pistons put the new pads in re bolt caliper do the same on the other side

when your doing the brakes you want to look at the rotor make sure its smooth also you can look at the old pads them selves if one pad is more worn

the the other the calipers may need replacing make sure you buy a can of brake cleaner that way you can wipe any grease off the rotors grease and brakes don't mix nor will you stop, also if your rotors have lots of grooves

they will need to be replaced its not totally critical but brakes will last half the time than normally, also check fluid level once both brakes are replaced top off if needed its not totally critical to replace worn calipers or rotors but the new pad won't last long if you don't as far as brakes its always best to replace worn out calipers ie uneven wear or bad rotors with lots of grooves

you can take your rotors in to be turned meaning that a shop or machine shop puts on a lath and cuts the grooves out the problem with this is heating and cooling also any hair line cracks replace the rotors they will fail you looking for discoloration etc make sure you use cleaner specific to brakes

otherwise it will leave a chemical film and you may not stop and also wear eye protection

    hope this helps

How would I know when I need to replace brake pads?

I just had my new car inspected for my insurance company and it passed, but the mechanic said that I should probably think about changing the brake pads at some point. It's not a big deal now, but I'm wondering, how will I know when they do need to be changed? Obviously, I don't want to wait until I can't brake properly. If it matters, it's a '95 Pontiac Sunfire. Thanks.
How would I know when I need to replace brake pads?
Most cars now have a %26quot;clicker%26quot; or a %26quot;squealer%26quot; device that alerts you as to when the pads need replaced. If you hear a noise when braking, it's time to replace the brake pads.

How would I know when I need to replace brake pads?
    When your wheel falls off
In some wheels, you can visibly see the brake pads if you look closely.

Have your mechanic show you (off the car) what a brake pad is. That's the easiest way to learn what you're inspecting.

Also use a flashlight to better see the pads. Brake pads should be visibly inspected every 12,000 miles.

Be aware the front pads go first, due to deceleration. The majority of a cars' weight is in front. When you stop, that inertia is transferred to your front wheels (nosedive effect.)

Once you're hearing squealing, it's TIME to get to the shop.

  • When do you know you need to change your brake pads?

I have a 97 Honda Civic EX coupe.

Should I go by certain mileage as in every 50K miles or whatever? Or should I physically go look at the pads? If so, how thin is too thin? But I remember couple times the mechanic took the pads out it still look pretty thick to me (~.25%26quot; if I remembered right) it definitely had some to go until it hits the base material. So how do I tell when I should change my brake pads?

Also, if i do change anyone of them I should change all 4 right?

    Thanks!
When do you know you need to change your brake pads?
You can't go by mileage because every driver is different and many people have more stop and go driving which wears the pads faster.

Best way is to look at pads during tire rotation. With the wheels off the pads can be easily checked for uneven wear to determine if they need replacing. That is how I caught an early problem and prevented damage to a rotor. One side had worn much faster than the other due to a slight flaw in the pad.

Some pads have a device that make a high pitched squeal when they are getting close to needing replacement. If you wait till you hear metal grinding on metal you have waited too long and will most likely need to replace the rotors as well. Big expense!!

If you don't rotate your own tires every 6000 miles ask the shop people who do it for you to check it at tire rotation. That will give you piece of mind and save you a lot of money.

Usually the front will wear out first so you need only change BOTH front ones at the same time.

Always change the pads on left and right of the same axle, front or rear. ON a car I drove for 180,000 miles I changed the front pads almost twice as many times as the rear....
When do you know you need to change your brake pads?
When you hear 'em squeakin' you should clean them and if they keep doin' it you should start thinking about knew brakes.
No. 1, when your mechanic services your vehicle, they should check your brakes. No. 2, if they are worn out they usually start to squeak (they put metal in for this purpose)
WHEN YOU START TO HEAR A NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIKE A SCRAPEING SOUND WHEN YOU APPLY THE BREAKS AND IT IS EASY TO CHECK THE BREAKS REMOVE THE WHEELE AND LOOK UNDER THE ROTOR ARE PRIE THE BREAK PAD AWAY FROM THE ROTOR AND YOU CAN SEE IF THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED OR IF YOU DONT WANT TO MESS WITH IT TAKE IT TO A PEPBOYS SHOP AND THEY WILL CHECK IT FOR YOU FOR FREE THEY OFFER A FREE BREAK INSPECTION AND SO DO SOME OF THE OTHER SHOPS TOO OK HOPE THIS HELPS.......
Just look at your whole car...

Look at the brake pads, or if you hear them squeek then check them out. WHen you get the time. The car WILL stop even if it's bare metal. Been there done that. Drove*%26gt;? an 86 volvo for a month on bare metal. So, lol. Check it as often as you check your suspension, and battery charge, belts etc. Usually when one is worng, several more comes up. Bad belt? Don't know it, sooner or later your battries not getting FULLY charged for a month or two, and you break down because of broken belt and bad battery. Same with brakes. Pad is ALL the sudden worn, sooner or later your rotor will warp, get that turned. Trust me you'll know.

To answer your question, if normal economy, usually every year need to check it.
On disk brakes, there are rivets that will make a loud squeeling noise when you apply the brakes if the pads need to be replaced. All 4 wouldn't have to be replaced, but it would be a good idea, and the two on the front would have to be replaced at once.
Most brake systems have wear indicators on the pads. When they wear down they start making a squeaky noise. There are some gas stations and brake repair shops that offer free brake inspections like Midas.

Finally, if you do change them, change them all at once and have the rotors checked for runout or warping.
pads are a lot cheaper than rotors, what u been told is pretty safe, front brakes do a lot more work than back but have them all checked at one time because its cheaper to know earlier than too late also more expensive
When they ware down to only a few millimetres in material if you let them ware down to the metal you will damage the rotors and this is expensive to change.
physically inspect them, milage is a guide, not a hard and fast rule. check them every 6-8 months visually. you need not remove any wheels, if you can see from under the car side. just turn your wheels to check the front. you may have to remove the back tires if you have drums.

change front pads whenever they get under 1/8 %26quot; of pad left. that'll be about 40-50k. the rear should also be changed when they have under 1/8%26quot;.

if you have front and rear pads, use the pads as above. but if you have drum brakes on the rear, they wear much slower and the shoes should be changed no later than 60k.

timewise, pads last about 12-18 months, shoes about twice that. so basically, you'll change pads twice and shoes once in about 24-36 months, depending on your braking habits. if you have an automatic, you'll change pads early. if you have a stick shift, you use the engine to slow more than the brakes and the brakes can last longer, but just remember not to ride the clutch or push the clutch in when braking. don't push in the clutch until you are nearly stopped. it saves the clutch and pressure plate, and reduces wearing them out.

also, when coming to a stop, use light braking, over a longer distance. short braking causes uneven wear on both shoes and pads, resulting in jerking as you come to a stop. to get rid of the jerking you have to have the drums and rotors turned to even them out again.
alot of your pads today has a squeeler on them.when you hear it scraping the rotor then its time to replace them.
De Bossy answered your immediate question. I just thought I'd mention the mechanic part of your description.

Almost every mechanic I have ever gone to for whatever reason (im usually a DIY and always DIY with brakes) has checked my brakes and said the brakes need to be replaced. I have a funny feeling I know why!

Once, I went to my mechanic I USED to trust to get my radiator flushed. He said I needed to get the brakes replaced in the front where I had disc in the front and drum in the rear.

    I laughed and asked if the place was %26quot;under new management.%26quot; He said, %26quot;yeah, can you tell?%26quot;

I went on to show him the brand new box I put my old brakes into. The receipt was still there so I could return the old ones to the auto parts place. It proved I had done it that previous weekend.

Here's the point. If you can, just check your own brakes. If they are even somewhat worn, like say only a fourth used, the shop will probably tell you to replace.

How do you change brake pads and rotors for a 1996 dodge grand caravan?
Take the cap off the master cylinder (where you put the brake fluid in). Remove the wheels. Remove the 2 bolts holding the calipers on, and slide the calipers off of the rotors. Do not let them hang by the hoses. Tie them to something with some bailing wire, etc. Remove the two bolts that hold the caliper mounting brackets to the hub assembly. The rotors shold pull right off. If not, beat 'em with a hammer like you mean it until they pop off. Installation is the reverse of removal except you're gonna need a decent sized C-clamp to push the pistons on the calipers back in. Do this nice and easy and real slow. The reason you took the cap off the master cylinder is to allow the fluid to back up when you compress the caliper pistons.

Tools-wise: basic hand tools, and you might need to find a torx bit for the caliper bolts. C-clamp

Your best bet ist to go get a Haynes manual for it when you by the parts. It has complete intructions and pictures.

How do i change my brake pads on my 2000 ford ranger?
You will need a jack, Jack stands, and Wheel blocks (In the event that the brake fails or your truck slips out of gear) the pads for the truck, Brake cleaner, a C-clamp (About a 6 in), wire or metal hangers, and Basic hand tools.

Break the lug nuts lose but do not remove them from the tires. Raise and support the truck with the jack and jack stands. Make sure the truck is resting on the jack stands and it does not rock back and forth. Remove the lung nuts from the wheels and remove the tires.

Once the tires are removed inspect the brake hoses and the calipers for cracks, wear, or other damage. The Calipers are held in place by 2 bolts. They may us a socket or a torx bit. (Normally a T-15 or t-20.) It varies on fords. I have seen both on their trucks. Loosen and remove the support bolts. With a small flat blade screw driver gently pry the caliper off the rotor (Make sure you do not scar, gouge, or damage the caliper or rotor in this process. The caliper should pull out of the support fairly easy. Next remove the outer pad from the caliper. With the old pad still in place use the C clamp to compress the piston on the caliper. You need to compress the piston in to the caliper other wise the new pads will not fit back around the rotor on the truck. For best results and to keep from damaging the control valve on the ABS Crack the bleeder valve on the caliper. Remove the inner pad after the piston is fully compressed.

Once the caliper has been compressed close the bleeder valve and use the wire or the hanger to help support the caliper, do not let the caliper hang from the brake hose. With the caliper supported and out of the way inspect your calipers for groves, glazing, burn marks, or uneven ware. Also take this time to inspect the pads that have been removed for uneven wear as well.

For the best possible brake job and to give you the best stopping power, pull the rotors and take then down to the auto parts store and have then turned. This takes care of a number of things that can cause poor performance from brakes. It removes the glaze from the surface, it true鈥檚 the rotor (All rotors warp no matter how you drive) and it also gives a good clean surface for the brakes to mate too.

Once you get the rotors back from the auto parts store (Normally takes about an hour or two to complete the turning.) it's time to reassemble the system. a few things you need to do prior to reassembly is clean up the contact surfaces of the caliper and the mounting bracket also to use the brake cleaner to remove any grease, dirt, or metal filings that may have been left over from the machining process. Use some paper towels to wipe away the excess brake cleaner, install the rotors on to the car.

Next you need to install the calipers, these are free floating calipers and need to have a good clean lubricated surface to operate correctly. Using some sand paper or a wire brush remove any rust on any of the mating surfaces for the caliper and the mounting bracket. It doesn't need to be perfect but the cleaner you can get it the better. once the surface it cleaned up use a little bit or grease and apply it to both the mating surface of the caliper and the mounting bracket (We will some times use some small strips of Teflon to help them glide a little better but you do not need to do this. Install the new pads remove the caliper from the hanger and reinstall the caliper on to the car. You will need to lube the bolts as they help the caliper move freely as well. Install the bolts and tighten to hold the caliper in place.

Once the pads and the calipers have been installed and everything is sitting how it should, you will want to pump the breaks to help seat the pads against the rotors. (Starting the car will help as it uses the power break booster to help seat the brakes.) Check the pedal for feel. If they are a little spongy, this is likely because you opened the bleeder valve, you need to have some one pump the brakes while you bleed the system out. The best way to complete this is to start at the wheel that is farthest from the driver鈥檚 seat, which would be the passenger rear wheel. Have your assistant pump the brakes and hold them, you crack the bleeder valve and look for air bubbles. If you see none lock the bleeder valve and move to the next wheel. Follow this process until you have done all the wheels working from the farthest wheel to the closest wheel to the driver.

Once you have completed the bleeding process put the wheels back on. Install the lug nuts and tighten then while still on the jack stands. Lower the car and then recheck the wheel lugs. Top off the brake fluid and then take the truck out for a test drive. Start out slow and do not get in to the brakes. They need time to seat and break in the new surface. You truck should stop just as well as it did when you purchased the car.

How do i change my brake pads on my 2000 ford ranger?
just go to servicing center and ask them to change the breaks
On a 2000 Ranger, assuming you have the front of the truck jacked up with the wheels removed, you need a 13mm socket or wrench to remove the two brake caliper bolts. Once the caliper is removed, hang the caliper with a piece of coat hanger, or something else suitable. You will need a 1/2%26quot; drive 15mm socket and johnson bar to remove both of the caliper bracket bolts. Once removed, install the new anti-rattle clips and new brake pads onto the caliper bracket making sure the appropriate brake pads with the wear indicator tab on the INBOARD side of the bracket. Depending on whether your truck is 4x4, or 4x2, the brake rotors just %26quot;knock off%26quot; if it's 4x4. If it's 4x2, you will need to remove the center dust cap, and the cotter pin, as well as the floating bearing retaining nut in order to remove the rotor. The procedure is extensive for 4x2, so if you want further information, you can e-mail me, and I'll be happy to help you out. Hope this helps.
